New Year's Day on the Sarsi

Also found in the Deck Logs of the USS Sarsi was the first entry of 1947.  A little verse to start the year.  The officers, who were responsible for the keeping of the logs were: LT Malayter, ENS
McClurg, CWO Akucewicz, and WO Calef.  It is unknown who penned the verse.

It reads:

     1 Jan 1947
Here it is New Year's Morn,
        Neath a clean Polar Sky
A Bright New Year for the U.S.S. Sarsi is born,
        Moored portside to permanent pier
The weather is fine and the air is clean.
From here at the Naval Air Station is seen
The flickering lights of Kodiak, Alaska beam.

I must assume that service in the Aleutians had its dull moments.
